Broken Baby’s new single channels my approach to 2025 – screw the algorithm

Broken Baby is consistently one of my favourite duos in music. Their style of rock often carries a sanguine sarcasm to it, with their lyrics and hooks equally sharp-tongued. There is often comedy in tragedy if you take a step back and look at it from a distance. Broken Baby does this lyrical humour excellently and their new single ‘So Pointless’ is a case study in it.

Amber Bollinger and Alex Dezen create a lot of noise and chaos as a duo and they embrace their DIY spirit with home recordings – although you’d never spot it from their glossy production. ‘So Pointless’ is a standalone single that Broken Baby says describes a period of their lives where the duo says they lost the fun in the creativity of making music. In their email newsletter, the band said:

“When we started Broken Baby in 2017, it was pure play – we felt like two kids in [a] sandbox, making noise, having fun, and not giving a damn about how it was perceived or even if it would be received. It was all spontaneity, all spark. But somewhere along the way, maybe we lost a little bit of that magic. We got bogged down by algorithms and the pressures of content conformity, and suddenly it wasn’t about the joy of creation anymore. That childlike curiosity we started with? It got buried.

It got us thinking about the point of it all – of making music. Maybe it allows us to process what words alone cannot express, connects us with others, to create beauty or chaos in a world that feels indifferent. Maybe it’s about rebellion – against the monotony, expectations, or the notion that everything must have a purpose. Maybe it doesn’t need to have a point. Maybe the value is often just in the act of making it, the existence of it, reminding us that meaning doesn’t always have to be justified – it can simply be.

This one’s for anyone who’s felt weighed down by the pressure to “get it right” instead of letting it happen.”

As we enter 2025 with generative AI companies pushing legal copyright agendas for their corporate gain, algorithms filtering content out, and tech platforms manipulating the digital world – it’s a tough time to be creative. I’m equal parts enraged, disappointed, despondent and envigorated to show that human creativity matters. It can make you mad and it saps the fun and enjoyment from creating art. I spent New Year’s Day drawing out my personal 2025 plan and it reminded me why I love writing and discovering new music again. It feels like Broken Baby has had a similar moment of realisation too.

So let’s collectively say “fuck it” to the big corps, algorithms and unfair landscapes and be the change we want to see in 2025.

Enjoy the excellent single ‘So Pointless’, which is out as a standalone single now on Bandcamp. In the same newsletter, Broken Baby announced they are writing songs for their third album and intend to fly their flag of creative chaos prouder and louder than ever.
