A song two years in the making, ‘Pretrial’ is Fiona Apple’s latest single. The rustic, hand drum, flute, bass, and vocal-led performance sees Fiona tackle the problem of ‘Pretrial’ in America. On the companion site lethergohome.org, it states:
“On any given day, 190,600 women and girls are incarcerated in the United States. Over 60,000 women are detained pretrial, presumed innocent, caged in US jails simply because they cannot afford to pay bail. Their average yearly income is just $11,000. Over 66% are mothers with minor children.“
The website links to the National Bail Fund Network and the Free Black Mamas DMV for donations. The punchy, direct, and catchy single fits right at home with her most recent album ‘Fetch Me The Boltcutters’ with its homemade appeal. The music video uses photos of women stuck in the pretrial world, cutting them out of family photos to show how this system unjustly removes them from family life. The impact isn’t just one woman, it’s usually a whole family.
There is no word on what else Fiona Apple is currently working on, but she is clearly firing on all cylinders. Maybe we will get more music soon, but in the meantime, ‘Pretrial’ is out now, and the message is an important one.
