Introducing… Vivienne Wilder

Darts and sludgy, swaggering rock – a combo I didn’t know I needed until I found Vivienne Wilder’s latest music video. ‘Ten Year Bender’ is the new single from the Toronto-based artist’s latest album ‘Terrible Human’, and when it’s not sloping guitar chugs and seedy string bends, it’s providing underground darts sport drama in the music video. It is fun to have music videos tell a story old-school style, and it shows the storyteller that Wilder is in music and in pictures.

Vivienne Wilder grew up surrounded by musicians, with a classical bassist father and a singing mother. She began learning the violin at three, the piano at four, then followed her father into the upright and electric bass world. After spates in jazz, classical, and folk music, Vivienne turned to rock in 2017. She recorded that with her five-piece band, The Vice Presidents, and has found her home in the rock world since.

For her new album ‘Terrible Human’, Vivienne explores identity, intimacy and destruction with a world-weary narrative approach to storytelling. With side eye humour, calling a spade a spade, and embracing self-loathing to control it and beat it to the ground, expect fiery lyrics and a trampled on sound. There is a “oh for fuck sake” malaise to Wilder’s sound that I gelled with on first listen. Maybe it is the “sloppy” roots of punk edges seeping through, but it gives her music bite and punch. The album has been tagged as “Bubblegrunge”, which is a new term for me, but I love it already.

‘Terrible Human’ is out now, and I’ll be picking it up personally on Bandcamp. You can find more information on all related projects on Vivienne Wilder’s website.
