Kristin McClement returns with new single, and hints at a follow-up to Higher Plain Music’s album of 2015

It has been ten years since Kristin McClement released an LP. I placed it as my favourite album of 2015. The alternative folk singer-songwriter has released an occasional single since then, but it looks like we’re getting a new release. Kritsin has teased that she has spent time recording new songs, and whilst a new EP or LP hasn’t been officially confirmed, I’m liking the plural of “songs”.

‘Lower The Sky’ is a sombre, dreamy, and philosophical single. Taking McClement and her knack for creating unusual earworms on the electric guitar, this track is dedicated to a friend of hers, David Ringland. On the release notes, it states, “He was a dear friend, brilliant musician, poet, mentor, spiritual guide and a great supporter of the music ebbing and flowing through the Brighton scenes, including mine. He now lives amongst the stars.”

The track begins as a quiet murmur, but in the second half percussion, bass, violin, and a bold clarinet join for a rousing plea to the gods above. “Lower the sky so I can see you again” sings Kristin early on, before the elegant and mournful finale simply questions “Heavenly Mother, Why? Heavenly Father, Why?” Often, Kristin’s music has a questioning skip or a twisted chord or note, and the main guitar rhythm does this well. It evokes a life gone too soon, or a music riff that lurches to rise but never quite fulfils its climactic destiny.

The single is out now on Bandcamp. For more information, visit Kristin McClement’s website.
