Sarah McLachlan returns with new single ‘Better Broken’

Having recently celebrated 30 years of her breakthrough album ‘Fumbling Towards Ecstasy’, Sarah McLachlan is back with a new single and album to follow. ‘Better Broken’ has an effortlessly nostalgic tone. The piano riff is mixed with funkier organ, bass, and guitar edge. There is a lullaby quality to the main melody, which is then dressed in some light Southern jazz-funk. The production has a vinyl spit to it and some filters that emulate the calm of lo-fi beats, too. Sarah’s voice is silky smooth and as confident as ever, and confidence has been something she’s talked about in interviews.

Whilst Sarah has been touring and performing since her last studio album ‘Shine On’ in 2014, and her Christmas-themed ‘Wonderland’ in 2016, knowing what and when to say something new had weighed on her mind. McLachlan has said she didn’t want to write for the sake of it, and as she’d prioritised raising her family for the time being, she wanted to wait until there was something worth saying. A few years ago, she had written a collection of songs about a bad breakup, but decided then wasn’t the time. By being out of the studio for nearly a decade, Sarah has also said she was worried about being rusty, or not at her full game, especially after losing her voice while rehearsing for the Fumbling Towards Esctasy tour. There is an excellent interview with the Toronto Sun, in which Sarah covers this detail. The spotlight returns to Sarah McLachlan again, and it’s as if she has never been away.

Enjoy the sumptuous music video for ‘Better Broken’, which is out now. It’s the title track from the forthcoming album, due for release on 19th September. For more information, visit Sarah McLachlan’s website.
