If you are in need of a protest song, then I think Mon Rovîa has something for you. Just nine days ago, Mon Rovîa released his single ‘Heavy Foot’, which comments on gun violence, and the narratives that governments and the super elite push to “keep us all down”. It’s a delicate yet rousing acoustic folk track that promotes love and unity in the face of oppression.
Mon Rovîa has also announced his debut album ‘Bloodline’, a 16-track album that explores his personal struggles and historical roots. His music covers war, loss, migration, and the search to belong. Mixing in Liberian roots with American and Appalachian folk, it isn’t shy about its message, but wants to leave you with a warm embrace. Speaking of the album, Mon says:
“When the name Bloodline first came to me in 2022, I recognized it as the title of my debut album. What I didn’t realise then was how long it would take to grow into the story behind that name, the grief, the quiet, and the slow disassembly of a self that resisted its own becoming. Even now, I move through life carefully, as though visibility might undo me, as though being seen might awaken an identity I’m still learning how to carry: Mon Rovîa.”
‘Bloodlines’ will be released on 9th January 2026. Whilst I’ve included ‘Heavy Foot’ as the most direct protest folk song to date, Mon has released a new single yesterday to celebrate the album announcement. It is a soft ballad called ‘Whose face am I‘, that explores his adoption from war-torn Liberia and the universal desire to understand one’s heritage. This album has all the hallmarks of a classic, and in a divided world, I hope it helps some heal. For more information on Mon Rovîa, subscribe to him on YouTube.
