Noise-punk trio OGRE’s new single ‘HAIR’ is a wonderfully two-toned caustic riot. On one hand, we have a stompy, crowd-chanting lockstep bass riff that leads the verses and shouty vocals. On the other hand, there is a freeform chaos that punctuates the verses that let the trio bask in calamity and angst. You’d be forgiven for thinking the trio were a guitar, bass, and drums trio, given the wide range of sounds they create. OGRE are infact a double bass band with a rhythm and a lead bass driving the rock home.
That duality between a rigid framework and freeform chaos is born out of the creative structure of the band members. Nils, the drummer, explains that Grace’s rhythm guitar provides the structure to allow Ace’s lead bass to get experimental. It’s funky and grungy in unison, as you aren’t sure where the tension is going to explode next. Speaking about the single ‘HAIR’, Grace, who wrote the track after finishing beauty school, said, “It’s about the biological relevance of hair growing on heads and crotches—it kind of came out gross.”
‘HAIR’ is out now as a digital single. It’s one of those songs that took a couple of listens to wrestle with before it truly clicked. I love the grungy opening, and the staccato plod of the rhythm bass slowly builds the tension for unravelling later on. For more information about the band, visit OGRE’s website.
