LA-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Cinder Well is an artist who takes music based in folk origins, but often transports them into other genres. Sometimes it is more chamber folk or pop, sometimes there is an experimental classical feel, and other times it’s metal! The throughline across Cinder Well’s work is that there’s often a stark, haunted minimalism to it. Cinder’s voice might be isolated in the mix, or the arrangement might be stripped back to a select few instruments. She also composed the theme song to the TV show Small Prophets.
‘While the Womb Screams Silently’ is the lead single from Cinder Well’s forthcoming album ‘A Blooming Body’. It marks the first album that she has co-produced, and it’s due for release on 17th July. Also new is the addition of horns. Cinder Well’s has said that she previously structured songs around violin melodies, but for this new album, piano, horns, synths, e-bow, and sound textures form part of the melodies. The single is a hauntingly dark affair. The piano and vocal lead the way with some fantastic visual imagery for the lyrics. Cinder Well sings of being painted perfectly in man’s image and forced to smile on the surface, whilst desperation bubbles up underneath. The song refuses to crack the tension, but instead introduces soft, brushed percussion, violins, and horns to accent the quiet horror.
Speaking about the album, Cinder Well says:
“I find that sonically, pulling back into moments of silence and restraint can be eerie in a way that sometimes we think only loudness can achieve… I experimented with being descriptive about the world around me, even when it did not appear to be conventionally lyrical.”
If you are a fan of stark folk and chamber pop, you’ll be right at home. The single ‘While the Womb Screams Silently’ is out now. For more information about the album and the following tour, visit Cinder Well’s website.
