‘War in the East. War in the West.” Anja Plaschg’s voice bellows with visceral disgust on the debut single from Exit Void. Spearheaded with Anja’s vocals and electronics, Exit Void is a sextet of Austrian musicians who embrace the chaotic, gothic doom spiral of life in 2026. It’s a fantastical, visceral mixture of live drums, trumpet, and guitars, which are distorted and damaged by electronics. Add in some dark, guttural vocals, and you have a recipe for success.
Joining Anja are Manfred Engelmayr (guitar), Katrin Euller aka Rent (electronics), Alex Kranabetter (trumpet, electronics), Wolfgang Lehmann (guitar, electronics), and David Reumüller (drums, electronics). Their lead single is accompanied by a short 92-second noise bleed of wheezing trumpet, gravelled ambience sizzles, distant screams, and a pulsating kick drum that replicates a giant machine canon. Both tracks take on a very clear anti-war stance by painting the hellscape of war as a scorched husk of a planet. I’m excited to see where EXIT VOID take this experiment.
