Queen of the mystical dark realms of rock, Chelsea Wolfe, has announced a 43-date tour across the US and Europe, and to celebrate, she’s released a double single. The US leg of the tour will run from September to October, whilst Europe runs from November to December. The superb Jonathan Hultén will support the US leg, with excellent A.A. Williams supporting the European leg. There isn’t a UK date, but Wolfe is playing at the ArcTangent Festival in August.
The double singles ‘Death is Not the End’ and ‘The Dark’ were unveiled on consecutive days, each with music videos showcasing the duality of Chelsea’s music. ‘Death is Not the End’ transitions from gentle ethereal tones into a ravaged, sludge-rock dirge with Wolfe’s voice passionately declaring ‘I keep hoping death is like the ocean and I’m floating, an angel in the kelp’. It’s cinematic, and the music video has some beautiful underwater photography. ‘The Dark’ pulls a similar move, transitioning from folksy acoustic instruments into a plugged rock sound for its bridge, final chorus, and outro, but this track is more contained. By contained, I mean the main melodic riff and skippity beat feel more approachable and hooky compared to the emotional trench bombs of ‘Death is Not the End’. Both are great additions to an already stellar catalogue. You’ll also spot Matt Chamberlain on drums, so that Chelsea Wolf / Tori Amos Venn diagram continues to merge nicely.
I’ve read reports that these singles are the first tracks from Chelsea Wolfe’s yet-to-be-announced ninth studio album, but Wolfe’s newsletter hasn’t said either way. If they are, we’re in good hands. If not, this is the best way to announce a massive tour I’ve seen for ages!
For more information on future music, tour dates (we’re missing continents still to make this a true world tour), and yes, Wolfe’s witchy perfume collaboration, visit Chelsea Wolfe’s website. Yes, that is genuinely a thing. It looks suspiciously well-themed, too.
