Bio Music Vibrations uses technology to listen to plants and trees around us

Each plant has its own song.

I’ve been on an exploratory journey with artists who use synths and microphones to pick up the electronic frequencies of plants, trees, and flowers and translate the sound into music. One of my favourite discoveries on this journey has been Bio Music Vibrations. This sound project uses biofrequency sensors to detect electronic activity in nature and, using a modular synth, turns this data into meditative sound. The music is recorded live, but then lightly edited to reach a 432Hz frequency, and some tracks include binaural beats and theta waves, known to relax the mind.

I find Bio Music Vibrations’ work stands out in particular because it doesn’t follow a linear structure. You’ll hear waves and patterns of sound, but it’s rarely rhythmic or in a distinct time signature. The first track I discovered was Mullein, and there’s a gentle throb and pulse to the track that feels like I’m tuning in and out of a sound stream. There are tiny trickles of sound that occur regularly, but never quite the same. It sounds like being held in a warm, milky bubble of entropy, and it’s beautifully put together. Being able to see the “performance” captured live in nature adds to the charm. Sometimes the natural world creeps in, like the ocean waves in the background of the Wild Juniper Tree piece

A particular favourite is when the project hooks up sensors to a fallen tree from a storm. Out of curiosity, there was a wonder if any electrical pulses would remain, but they are. Quite how much interpretation Bio Music Vibrations does is unknown, but the sound is mournful and dirge-like, like a long drawn-out exhale. It is comfortingly sad, whilst distant bird song chips cheerfully and full of life in the background. I wasn’t expecting listening to a broken tree to be so thought-provoking…
