Los Angeles singer-songwriter Natalie Nicoles gives a tender, hushed, and captivating rendition of her track ‘Hard Fork’. With just an acoustic guitar, the garden ambience, and Natalie’s soft and melancholic voice, I found myself drawn into a tiny world of secrets and wonder. Taken from her latest EP ‘Fruit Of The Sorrow’, the studio version has layers of hushed vocals and a swirling folktronica wash to its background atmospherics. It’s beautiful, yet I have a soft spot for the simplicity of this performance, too. I also love how the second chord in the verses has an unsettling brood to it. Disquieting despite the lullaby strum. When artists take a less-trodden chord progression, I usually know I’m in for a good, miserable time.

I’ve found several personal favourite and new (to me) artists through their stripped-back, “me and my guitar in the garden” approach to live performances.
