Unusual Instruments: The Glass Armonica

Better than out of tune wine glasses!

The first of a new sporadic series on Higher Plain Music is to introduce you to some highly unusual musical instruments. I wanted to kick off with the Glass Armonica as I’ve been composing with it (digitally) to create some eerie celestial sounds. The Glass Armonica is like taking all of your wine glasses you wanted to make a tune with and laying them sideways on a rotisserie. You can then spin that rotisserie around with a wheel and pedal. This means that you are no longer limited to just two glasses (or as many players as you can get) – now you play them like keys. Kinda.

I find the sound fascinating so I’ve placed some explanation videos below. Perfect for a thriller or an angelic cinematic moment? I think so.
