Introducing… Brooke Sharkey

Calm and confidence from a new found home.

Brooke Sharkey’s new track ‘Mmm Ja’ is the very definition of a slow burn. The UK born singer-songwriter moved to Oslo in between the two world waves of the pandemic and set about trying to integrate into a new environment. Whilst about and about in Oslo taking photos, she met someone from the Ivory Coast and they spoke about the trials and tribulations of fitting into a new place called home. Inspired by this ‘Mmm Ja’ was born. It focuses on Brooke Sharkey’s beautiful soft voice and a growing tick of acoustic and synth orchestration. What I love about the piece is how it slyly transitions from a delicate and beautiful ballad into something sparse yet grand. As soft percussion and strings seep in, the arrangement gets more bombastic but Sharkey’s voice stays unwaveringly calm.

‘Mmm Ja’ is the first single Brooke Sharkey has released for Babylegs Records. Brooke is working on a selection of new songs and is collaborating with Mesadorm’s Blythe Pepino. I’m excited to hear where all of this goes as ‘Mmm Ja’ is a poised and confident entrance. Enjoy the self-directed and produced music video below. You can follow Brooke Sharkey on her website.
