Sadly today composer Ryuichi Sakamoto has died. He had battled cancer whilst composing music right up to his passing. His musical influences span decades and medium and he is a true great in the musical world. One medium I wasn’t aware of until today was his work making ringtones for Nokia. With huge thanks to Tech Product Bangers, a YouTube channel that posts ringtones and app motifs, an extended video of Nokia 8800 ringtones has been posted in honour of Ryuichi Sakamoto. Ringtones are a wonderful footnote in technology, much like microcopy in writing, that requires a special skill set. This video shows that indeed, Ryuichi Sakamoto penned many, many bangers.
Rest in Peace and thank you for the music, Ryuichi Sakamoto.
