Mary Jane Dunphe has been part of the underground music scene for years. Now she is setting it out alone. The former Vexx, CCFX, Gen Pop and County Liners member has taken her brand of avant-pop to the dance floor. Expect hard-hitting basslines, crunchy drum machines, a cavalcade of guitars and dramatic vocals and this is exactly what the lead single ‘Stage of Love’ brings. I love its sense of tape-warped danger. Considering her background is a mixture of odd pop and country-tinged music, this mash-up of ideas shouldn’t be a surprise but it’s deliciously fresh and hedonistic.
Speaking about ‘Stage of Love’ and her debut album of the same name, Mary Jane Dunphe describes it as a lonely walk at night. “It’s me feeling so alone and simultaneously celebrating it and damning myself for it,” Dunphe explains. “It’s the freedom and the prison of living a life in solitude which is how I have felt the past three years for sure. It’s dreams too, and sleep demons, and open fields, and meaningful pauses.”
The album itself is due for release on the 25th of August and the vinyl is available for pre-order. The single is out now, with a fun music video below to get yourself acquainted. For more info on all things Mary Jane Dunphe, follow her on Bandcamp.
