New York City has its own creative and cultural ecosystem and that has been one of the biggest inspirations for Morgan Swihart. Soaking up different influences such as Riot Grrl and Pat Benatar, Morgan’s music is a mesh of alt-rock with splashes of electronic and folk thrown into the melting pot. Think PJ Harvey making ‘To Bring You My Love’ through the eyes of someone like Phoebe Bridgers or an Americana version of Daughter and you’d hit the right vibe. There is a beautifully nostalgic 90s alt-rock pulse beating under the surface, which gives Swihart’s music grit and edge.
Morgan Swihart released her debut album ‘The Grave’ last year but hasn’t slowed down. EP ‘Haunt Me’ followed and last week ‘Broken Ceilings’ was released. It is an 8 track album pushing the alt-rock sound to the forefront. Lyrically Morgan pulls from her personal experiences around mental health and coming of age in an ever-changing world. The album itself explores lots of other rock from big traditional rock numbers through to the darker edges of cowboy folk.
The lead single ‘I Just Wanna Go’ is deceptively catchy and will sink under your skin with ease. The chorus has a dismissive lilt to it that the full band sound nails. It reminds me of my favourite female rock artists circa 1998 when rock and synths started to collide. It might be 25 years too late to be a sleeper hit on MTV but you can enjoy the track below. Both it and the album are out now. You can pick up the order using your preferred platform and I’ll be circling back for a review next month.
