What if Annie Lennox and Heather Small raised the next generation of power pop artists? That’s where my mind goes upon hearing the powerful vocals and strident, anthemic pop beats and keyboards of Sarah Nimmo. The London-based singer-songwriter was previously part of the duo NIMMO, which ran for almost a decade. Now, Sarah is embracing the best of 80s and 90s British pop to take us back to melodic pop that carried emotion and meaning. Sarah has been a staple on the queer music scene in London for years, earning her a dedicated audience. Turn the volume up on her music, and you’ll quickly understand why.
Sarah Nimmo’s debut LP ‘How Can I Explain Myself?’ is due out on 12th June. The single that I connected with most in the run-up to it is ‘The Soul’. The drums and retro disco synths call back chart-topping hits of the late 80s. The catchy chorus showcases Sarah’s higher register, backed by gospel bursts of backing vocals. I love how the track balances an aggressive, onward pulse, whilst allowing for serenity and elegance in the vocals. I remember when pop was this good, and now we don’t need to reminisce. Play it loud and proud, as with most of Sarah’s music, the songs feel like anthems for the queer community as much as individual triumphs.
