UK DJ, producer, and performer Bonobo (Simon Green) has announced his latest album ‘Distance in Static’ will be released on 11th September. The multi-talented artist has spent time working on tracks as part of his club set, as he seeks to merge the DJ and live performer sides of his musicality. Often known for his take on downtempo, trip-hop, and club bangers that weave in global influences, this latest album will be no different. The album includes a guest list of artists that evokes a rich tonal palette. Arooj Aftab, Joy Crookes, Nilüfer Yanya, Ichiko Aoba, Nicole Miglis, and Aanya Martin are all guest performers. They’ll be singing in English, Urdu, and Japanese, whilst Iranian and Chinese instruments and samples will feature.
With 25 years of music behind him, Bonobo is using ‘Distance in Static’ as a way to close the current chapter on his introspective club music. Reflecting on the fact that younger generations are now discovering his previous music, Bonobo says that he finds his previous work acting like a beacon, or distant signal, searching for discovery in a world full of noise. That search for belonging and transcendence is what drives the heart of the album. The album will be supported with a multi-year full live-band world tour. What’s interesting is that Bonobo has gone on record to say:
“It’s probably the last go-around the track in this format. I don’t know what [the future] will look like just yet, but it’s really about me redefining how to be a musician from here.
‘Me and You’ is the lead single. It channels the intimate approach Bonobo takes to melodies and sound, and pairs it with a club beat that just works. I can imagine this doing very well in open-air festivals. A clever use of vocal samples and sharp percussive pulses makes it an easy recommendation. The music video is based on designer Trevor Jackson’s idea of alien landscapes. The visuals will transition into the live show, in collaboration with Pierre Claude. Can an alien world feel familiar? It may well be if you are in the right groove.
