Marina Yozora mixes together dream pop and shoegaze rock to create music that lets her voice ethereally whisper and float over the hazy guitars. I’ve found that Instagram really knows my music taste now, and well-tagged artists are popping up in my feed, and that’s how I discovered Marina. I was instantly drawn in by how intimate and childlike her vocals were, yet the guitars could turn into a wave of noise at a moment’s notice. Some tracks are just Marina and her guitar, with some occasional bass. Others are bigger band efforts that embrace the shoegaze vibe wholeheartedly.
After moving to London in 2024, Marina has been releasing singles every few months as she builds up towards an EP or LP. The latest of these is ‘Snow Heat’, which encapsulates everything I adore about intimate dreampop. There is a Melanie Garside quality to Yozora’s work that invites curiosity and playfulness, even when the music is melancholic and introspective.
Marina recorded four versions of ‘Snow Heat’, and each month will see a new version released. The full-band dream pop version leads the quartet before the solo, acoustic, and string versions are released later. The track itself was written before Yozora moved from Tokyo to London, and these four versions were recorded with her European friends.
‘Snow Heat’ is out now. For more information, follow Marina Yozora on Bandcamp.
