Steady Holiday sings about motherhood with her new single ‘New Generation’

The whiplash of parenthood in song and video.

Dre Babinski, aka Steady Holiday, has returned with her latest single ‘New Generation’. As a new mum, she wanted to write about a universal experience that feels so deeply profound, yet personal when zoomed in to the individual level. In her recent newsletter, she has described the single as about “the whiplash of new parenthood”. I think many can relate. It reminds me of the realisation that your tiny human is going home with you, and there’s no exam to pass to make sure you can do a good job. I remember when my elder sister had her first child, and she said to one of the nurses when they told her she could go home, “are you sure?”

Sonically, Steady Holiday continues to lean into sumptuous dream pop and delicate indie rock. The song sounds like a dream sequence, with uptempo, bubbly delivery, and a 70s hazy screen transition all rolled into one. The lyrics sing of the will to create a safe world for their child, and it’s genuinely sweet and uplifting. It is a lovely song, accompanied by a relatable music video as Steady Holiday’s home gets slowly trashed to bits with baby clutter. As the lyrics reference letting go of her old self, there’s an acknowledgement that parenthood is absolutely fantastic, but also exhausting and all-consuming too.

Enjoy the fun music video, which is something of a Steady Holiday staple. ‘New Generation’ is out now on Bandcamp. Whilst there has been no announcement of an album or EP yet, this is the first track in nearly over a year. I sense something is brewing!
