Music technology continues to allow composers and musicians to try new ideas. The blurring between what is tech and what is a traditional instrument is constantly changing. Jas Shaw takes a fascinating trip into this grey area with his forthcoming album. ‘Sollbruchstelle’ has been created by sending electrical noises into a real piano. When the pulses hit the soundboard or other areas of the piano, the energy excites the piano in weird and wonderful ways. It sounds like a prepared piano at times but it has shapeshifted into a weird fusion synth. I love the idea behind it. Exploring abstract ways to create different sounds that you wouldn’t expect from something acoustic is superb.
Jas Shaw has spent the last year in isolation due to health risks and the pandemic. Having lived mostly in a single room (I feel your pain Jas), he has spent the last year creating this crazy inventors kit. It is difficult to explain how it sounds although Aarp sprung to mind as a similar artist. It is best I just let the music do the talking.
