Multi-instrumentalist Mara Simpson has been approaching her third album with a newfound inner strength. Mara spent most of 2019 in a state of worry with her one-year-old daughter in and out of hospital. She had also been trying to record an album but found it stuck in production hell with a toxic producer. This all came to a head when Mara decided enough was enough – no more juggling – time to take a stand. Instead of finding fear, it was relief and release as now she could focus on family and getting the vision for her new album that she truly wanted.
The first single from that forthcoming album is ‘Reason’. It is a powerful and melodic mix of alt-rock, folk, blues and some much-loved piano rocking. There’s an awful lot going on sonically with both real and synth instruments painting the soundscape. Mara’s own voice is powerful too as each chorus rises and rises again in tone and spine. Give me big drums, statement piano riffs and hearty vocals and I’m here for it! ‘Reason’ is out now and you can enjoy the track below. The much-awaited third album is due out in the Autumn.
