It feels a bit cheeky writing an introducing style post for an artist gearing up to release their 10th album, but I’ve only just stumbled across Kris Delmhorst. At least I have a massive back catalogue to discover! The New England-based artist creates the kind of ruminating rock that appeals to those who worry at 2 am about life, love, and what it’s all about. Whilst Kris’ work is usually plugged, she crosses a variety of styles but I’d say if you like singer-songwriter Americana, you’ll be at home here.
Kris Delmhorst’s lyrics often meditate on grief and loss. Her new single ‘Something To Show’ – along with her forthcoming album ‘Ghosts In The Garden’ continues that theme. On the single, Delmhorst said:
“I tend to spend the middle of the night ruminating on things, and this song is the story of my consciousness leaving my body lying there, floating out the window out into the night, rowing across a dark lake of sky, looking for answers.”
I find Kris’ comments on middle age quite fascinating too, as she worries about ageing parents and her child growing up and getting ready to leave the nest. “….it feels like everything is happening at one, past and the future crowding into the present tense.” This is exactly how I feel at 40, having lost my dad and almost my mum this year and feeling like I have to justify my existence in an uncaring world every day. This kind of spiralling mind is gently lulled by the ethereal and earthy Americana production and band set-up that lets the listener ponder and muse too.
Enjoy ‘Something to Show’ below. The single is out now and will be the closer on the album. The album ‘Ghosts In The Garden’ is due for release 7th March 2025 and is available for pre-order. For more information about Kris Delmhorst, visit her website.
