Miss Black Sabbath or have a penchant for medieval fantasy metal? Then, if you haven’t already discovered Castle Rat, then I have a treat in store for you. This superb high fantasy metal band formed in 2019, although I only discovered them with their 2025 album ‘The Bestiary’. Each album and performance plays out like a fantasy adventure, complete with characters, narration, and a lot of theatrical performances. Expect unison guitar and bass performances and extravagant costumes.
KEXP, which continues to do S-tier work for music discovery, hosted Castle Rat for a live show. Expect high drama metal, atmospheric synths, hair guitar solos, and catchy riffs that you could mosh to for days. Castle Rat really feel like they’ve arrived from 1976 to cast an enchanting doom spell on everyone. They have concocted something truly special with their brand of fantasy adventure and doom metal.
